What You Should Consider Before Buying Online

Today there are several types of internet technologies that make things much easier, faster, broader, and more efficient than conventional shopping. Twenty years ago there were just a few options for purchasing items from the convenience of your own home (phone and catalog ordering). Today the internet has changed that. One concept, that while may not really be any "faster" in terms of delivery is purchasing online via online retail web stores. This has revolutionized the way we choose what we are buying, when, and from whom. You can now get out of bed at 4 a.m. and order a brand new LCD HD-TV within minutes (if you already know which make and model you want. If not you may shop around a bit. Still the option of browsing a store is still possible right from your home at 4 a.m.) Then you can go right back to bed without needing to speak to anyone. Instead of having two, three or even five stores in your area you now have literally thousands, and possibly millions of online businesses that you can shop for the item. Gone are the days of waiting until the truck comes in at Sears until you get that fantastic new toaster. You can purchase the item directly from their online store and they can have it out to your doorstep in no time. You never have to leave your house. If one store does not have the item, it is likely several more will.

Often shoppers search for the very best deal in terms of price. Well obviously right? Sure, but don't buy based on price alone...

While price is certainly a factor it should not be solely what you make your basis for buying from a website. Just like buying directly at a physical location there are many other factors besides price a shopper should consider before purchasing from a web store. Shipping is the most obvious. Often prices at some online retail shops appear considerably low, until your shipping is calculated. Besides shipping there is sometimes a transaction fee (usually only up to a dollar but still it can exist). The online store is required to inform the buyer before the actual purchase if this is the case. Some list this at the shopping cart in smaller font (type face) so it may go unnoticed. Read your shopping cart calculation before hitting "submit" to see if in fact you are being charged a transaction fee of some sort. Also there is the fact that some e-commerce websites are slow to process your order. It can take up to ten days to ship an item from the time of purchase with some online retail stores (although this is not usually the "norm").

You have to consider how they are shipping the item as well. Consider who are the company uses as a transport medium to ship the product. Do you prefer UPS or Federal Express? Does it make a difference to you? How do you feel about shipping via USPS (united states postal service)? Are there other companies you would rather have it shipped by, and if so what are their rates? What shipping method are they offering? Is it going to take three to four days or two weeks to deliver the item after it has shipped? What are the companies return policies? What are their refund policies? How long would either take to complete and to actually get your account reimbursed should you be entitled and approved a refund? A good online retail shop should process using "SSL encryption" when processing your transaction over the internet. Make sure this is noted some where on their website. 128 bit Encryption is currently the standard for online transactions (as of 2008).

This is quite safe and secure. The data is tunneled. Meaning data-packets are placed inside protective outer packets. This helps to ensure both data delivery integrity as well as security. The data is scrambled and/or encrypted using some sort of keyed component. This means the data sent in the transaction is scrambled and undecipherable to an outside source should it be intercepted. A special set of keys is used to encrypt and decrypt the data and it is basically impossible to crack (decode) the key needed to actually then decode the data sent. Make sure your transaction is processed using at least 128 bit encryption at the online store you choose to shop at. Also it is a good idea to read the companies "privacy policy". A "Privacy Policy" is a statement that informs the buyer on whether or not they sell, or trade your personal information (such as name or email address etc.). The majority of online shopping websites do not partake in any of this information selling or trading these days. Regardless be sure to check to see if the web store has a privacy policy and if they do what it entails.
